Empowering WOMEN through Improved Water Security (1/6)

On the International Women's Day (March 8th), USAID Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change (USAID Mekong ARCC) project wants to share women's stories, particularly in rural villages of Lao PDR's Khammouan Province, through compelling images.

National Park Officials, monks, community leaders and school children were among the 200 members of Kok Klang Village, in northeastern Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon Province, who gathered together in a community reforestation effort on August 28th, 2015. In total, the group planted about 5,000 trees in the 16-hectare Non Sao Ae community forest, as part of a larger community adaptation effort supported by the USAID Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change (USAID Mekong ARCC) project and its partner, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Non Sao Ae and other forests provide nearby communities with many valuable products and services, and therefore require careful management in the face of anticipated climate change impacts.

“For the first time in fifteen years, my rice crop has completely failed,”
says Mr. Le Hoang An, a farmer from Thuan Hoa commune in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
“We didn’t get enough rain to wash the salt from the field, so the rice died when its roots hit the salty layer in the soil.”

“Last year during the rainy season, the entire village got sick from the drinking water,” says Asa, a farmer in northern Thailand’s Hae Ko village, adding, “This has been a problem for us over the last few years.” Asa said the rainfall has become irregular and heavier during the rainy season. This has caused soils on the hill sides to erode and sediments to enter their water supply. He explains, “During the rainy season, our drinking water is a reddish color.” He and the other villagers typically boil their water only when making tea, but not for other consumption.

It’s a sunny day and temperatures are already well above 30 degrees. On the back of a motorbike, we are travelling down the small paved road in the coastal commune of Thuan Hoa in Vietnam’s Kien Giang Province. We pass rice paddies, chickens, dogs, children and small houses. We are on our way to visit Mr. Tiet Xay, one of many farmers doing a rotation farming system between rice and shrimp culture in the commune. Just arrived in the commune and seeing the rice/shrimp farming systems for the first time, As I travel on the back of the motorbike, I think about aquaculture and how the development of this sector is progressing rapidly in Asia.
