Community Adaptation Initiatives in Kampong Thom, Cambodia

Implementing Partner: WFP (World Food Programme)

In partnership with World Food Programme (WFP) Cambodia, USAID Mekong ARCC is working in Kampong Thom Province, located in the central part of Cambodia between Tonle Sap Lake to the west and the Mekong River mainstream to the east. WFP is assisting six villages in Chey Commune—Koun Tnaot, Lvea, Ta Theave, Traneang Areak, Mohar and Prey Tup-- to strengthen their resilience through improved drought and flood management. The activity will help communities better prepare for the impacts that severe droughts and floods have on their agriculture and livestock livelihoods.

Site Information

Chey Commune is located approximately 15 miles north of Kampong Thom town in central Cambodia. In total 997 households make up Chey commune, with a total of 5,597 individuals. (View site map)

Analysis of Climate Impacts in Kampong Thom Province from USAID Mekong ARCC’s Lower Mekong Basin Climate Study

  • Kampong Thom Province is projected to experience significantly higher temperatures, with average daily maximum values increasing from 31°C to 34°C.
  • The province will also see increasing rain during the already wet, rainy season (by over 100 mm), while dry seasons in this province will become drier.
  • Large storm events will increase in intensity, and occur more frequently leading to flash flooding.

Projected Climate Vulnerabilities on Key Livelihood and Food Security Options in Kampong Thom Province

  • Heat stress in March-April decreases yields of lowland and irrigated rice.
  • Cassava and soybean are vulnerable to waterlogging and flash flooding caused by increased precipitation.  
  • Heat stress impacts fodder availability and reproduction rates, while flood events increase the spread of disease and herd loss of smallholder cattle.
  • Small-scale pig systems are sensitive to high temperature, resulting in reduced growth rates, reproductive rates and immunity.  

Community Identified Adaptation Activities for Communities in Kampong Thom Province

  • Training on modern agriculture techniques/ systems related to increasing climate resilience in livestock systems and climate resilient crops;
  • Improve pond/canal or other water source infrastructure;
  • Small business development within community; and
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities.
