SUCCESS STORIES: Adaptation Strategies Don’t End with USAID Mekong ARCC
25 September 2016
Author: USAID Mekong ARCC

The USAID Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change (USAID Mekong ARCC) project successfully finished in September after five years implementing science and community-driven rural adaptation activities across the Lower Mekong.

The results of USAID Mekong ARCC generated an evidence base on water, agriculture and ecosystem adaptation strategies that development partners—such as the Asian Development Bank, World Food Programme, and the Food and Agriculture Organization—are using to scale in Lower Mekong countries.

Project highlights include: completion of a cutting edge basin wide climate change vulnerability and impact study; undertaking rural adaptation measures to support the resilience of 30,000 local people; a 90-100 percent increase in climate change awareness among target beneficiaries; in Vietnam, scaling of results and lessons from a 52 hectare pilot on climate resilient rice shrimp farming techniques into the National Government plan for similar systems across 160,000 hectares of the Mekong Delta; in Cambodia, mainstreaming of participatory techniques for community development of climate change adaptation measures into the National Commune Investment Planning process; and implementation of proven gender responsive adaptation planning activities.
